Hello everyone and welcome to Issue #29 of Cargobike Culture!
This week’s issue is bit of a mixed bag, so enjoy!
Our woman in Japan
Cargobike Culture’s East Asia correspondent Kate Every is coming to the end of a two week vacation assignment in Japan. Whilst on the ground, she filed this story and photos:
Not seen any cargo bikes in the style you have [ed - a bakfiets] but lots of bikes with storage. Most have some kind of basket and lots of them have 1-2 child seats as well as a basket. Seems like it's definitely the primary means of transport for some families. Particularly seen people using them at school pick up and drop off times.
Thanks Kate for your diligent reporting.
Lots of cargo in cargobikes
This tweet from CargoCycle got me pretty excited. The Megaliner(!) can carry up to 500kg (1100lbs) and can fit three Euro pallets inside. It looks so much fun. I hope I can try one soon!
Kids in cargobikes
Last week, it was Cycle to School week in the UK. I loved this tweet from Kate Lidster who was ferrying her daughters and doggo to school in their Raleigh bakfiets.
Plants in cargobikes
This tweet brought London based Nightingale Gardens to my attention. They’re based in Herne Hill and have equipped themselves with a Raleigh cargobike and Carla trailer. The Carla trailers are particularly cool as they can be equipped with their own battery and motor, allowing you to pull some really heavy loads with any old bicycle.
Brides in cargobikes
And finally, you might have seen this tweet and video from Olivier Beens who used a bakfiets in his wedding celebrations!
That’s it for this week! Thanks for reading!
